It is not a metaphor and it is not a diagram. It is a live filing system a machine reads every day — and its schema was taken from a body of oil paintings made between 2010 and 2026.

01  ·  What it is

Twelve vertebrae. Twenty-four ribs. One address for everything.

Every piece of knowledge in this system lives at a fixed address on a skeleton with exactly twelve vertebrae. Off each vertebra hang two ribs: a brain rib that holds the meaning, and an accompany rib that holds the material — the photographs, the PDFs, the audio, the bytes.

Because the pair hangs off the same bone, the note about a painting and the photograph of that painting share an address. They cannot drift apart, get renamed out of alignment, or end up in two systems that disagree. There is no synchronisation step, because there is nothing to synchronise: one bone, two ribs.

Twelve is not a soft guideline. It is a hard structural constraint, the way a rib cage is a hard constraint. When a slot is not in use it is not empty — it is dormant, already named, already addressed, waiting. And a thing that has filled all twelve does not stop; it becomes a unit that can begin again at a level below.

What one neuron actually looks like

Pick that file up on its own, out of any folder, with no database and no index, and it still knows where it lives, what it leans toward, and why it was put there. The map is not a service the record depends on. The map is in the record.

02  ·  The six properties

What the structure buys you.

Property 01

Fetch, not search

The neuron is not a pointer to the entry. The neuron is the entry and the address. So a question is answered by walking — spine, vertebra, rib, arrival. Retrieval is traversal. Nothing is scanned, and there is no vector round-trip in the common path.

Property 02

Meaning and material, paired

Text and bytes hang off one vertebra. The accompany rib holds 712 items — images, documents, audio — under the same address as the notes that describe them. A file cannot become an orphan, because it never had a separate home.

Property 03

The map on every record

Self-locating fragments. A record copied to a phone, emailed, or restored from a backup taken years earlier carries its own coordinates. Rebuilding the index is a convenience, never a requirement — the corpus can regenerate the index from itself.

Property 04

One becomes twelve

Any single item can stay one, replicate once into six and six, or take on up to twelve children — at any time, without a migration. The unused remainder is dormant, not absent, so growth never reorganises what is already filed.

Property 05

The synapse that never dies

Connection weights fade with disuse and floor at 0.01. They never reach zero. Live weights currently run 0.052 to 2.277. Forgetting is impossible by construction: a quiet path is dim, but it is still a path, and it can be walked again.

Property 06

Twelve all the way down

Twelve ribs in the architecture, twelve neurons in a rib, twelve neurons in a neuron. Twelve is arrival, not a dead end — a completed twelve collapses back to a single unit that can begin again. Depth is unbounded; the branching factor never changes.

03  ·  The real shape

Nothing here is evened out.

These are the live counts. The ribs are wildly unequal, and that is the point — the shape of the cage is the shape of a working life, not of a schema someone balanced. Rib II is enormous because that is where the day-to-day went. Rib III is thin because it has barely been used yet.

1,895 of 1,916 records already answer the question “which rib?” — the structure reaches almost everything. But only 102 have been deliberately placed since the architecture was locked: a human choosing the rib and recording why. The remaining 1,814 were sorted by the older system and are being walked back one at a time.

Those numbers are published on purpose. A filing system that reports itself as finished is the one you cannot trust — and the gap between “has a rib” and “was placed” is exactly the work a machine cannot do on your behalf.

Touch one neuron. Four fifths of the brain moves.

This is the part that is not a filing system. A structure that only filed things would be a cupboard. What makes it a brain is that nothing in it is held alone — and that entanglement runs at six levels at once, only one of which is the obvious one.

What was thought beside what

13,408 connections across 2,369 neurons — a mean degree of 7.60, a maximum of 44. Touch one neuron and after four steps an average of 282 others have moved. After six, 949. The most connected neuron in the body reaches 1,909 — 81% of the entire brain.

Level 02  ·  across the ribs

Knowledge refuses to stay in its category

42.2% of every connection crosses from one rib to another. That number is the honest answer to whether twelve categories are a cage: they are not. The strongest entanglement in the whole body is Heart Rock ↔ Become — love and thought — with 1,041 connections. Nobody designed that. It is what sixteen years of working actually did.

Entanglement that was chosen, not inferred

Every record carries a _ribs list — the other ribs it leans toward, written by whoever placed it. So alongside the statistical entanglement there is an authored one. A machine can infer that two things co-occur. Only the person who put them there can say that one is about the other.

An entanglement made once is never undone

The floor is 0.01 and nothing is ever pruned, so a connection formed in 2019 is still walkable in 2036 — dimmer, never gone. Every other system in this class optimises for present relevance and silently destroys the past. This one treats having once been related as a permanent fact about the world, because it is one.

Several intelligences, one nervous system

A private model on the premises, a cloud model, a company operator, a guest. They do not hold four copies and they do not message each other. They share one skeleton and differ only in what they are permitted to see. They are entangled through the body itself — what one files, another can reach, with no sync, no queue and no integration.

The loop that closes on a person

Twelve paintings made over sixteen years became the twelve categories. Those categories now hold everything and decide where the next thing goes — which shapes what gets made next, which becomes rib material in turn. The person and the structure are inside each other's loop. That is the level nothing else here has, because it took sixteen years and it cannot be reproduced by writing more code.

Why levels 05 and 06 are the ones that matter

Levels one to four are engineering, and a good engineer could build them from this description. Level five is architecture — the decision that permission is a property of the bone rather than a rule kept beside it, which is what lets four different intelligences share one memory without four copies of the risk. Level six cannot be built at all. It can only be accumulated, and it is why this particular brain answers the way it does rather than the way a generic one would.

What is not entangled — published on purpose

192 neurons — 8.1% — have no synapse at all. They are filed, they have a rib, they are findable by address, and nothing has ever been thought beside them. That is not a defect to hide; it is the most useful diagnostic the system produces. An isolated neuron is either something genuinely new, or something that was filed and then abandoned — and the structure is what makes the difference visible.

05  ·  The honest part

What is actually new here — and what is not.

Anyone can claim novelty. The useful version of this section is the one that says plainly which parts have existed for decades.

Not new. Do not claim it.

  • Hierarchical taxonomies. Fixed-fanout trees are as old as filesystems. B-trees have a branching factor too.
  • Knowledge graphs with weighted edges. Standard. So is decay.
  • Self-describing records. JSON-LD, RDF, EXIF and sidecar metadata all embed context in the artefact.
  • Retrieval-augmented generation. Feeding a model retrieved context is now ordinary practice.
  • Content addressing. Git and IPFS made address-is-identity mainstream.

Uncommon, in this combination.

  • The fanout is a constraint, not an outcome. Most systems let a tree take whatever shape the data gives it. Here twelve is fixed first and the knowledge is fitted to it — which is what makes any address predictable before you look.
  • Meaning and material share one address by construction. Not linked, not joined, not synced. One vertebra, two ribs. The failure mode where a document and its attachment drift apart is removed rather than managed.
  • A decay floor instead of a decay-to-zero. Pruning is the default everywhere else. Refusing to prune — ever — is a deliberate and unusual choice, and it changes what the system can do years later.
  • Every fragment is self-locating. Not "the index knows where this is" but "this knows where it is," so the index is disposable and the corpus is the source of truth.
  • The schema came from a body of artwork. Twelve paintings made over sixteen years, before any of this was software. That is not decoration — it is why the categories are stable, and it is the part nobody else has.
The claim worth defending is not "we invented a tree." It is that a fixed twelve, paired ribs, a decay floor and a self-locating record — together — make a memory that a machine can walk instead of search, and that a person can still read by hand in twenty years.

What this is good for, beyond one artist's archive.

Avenue 01

Agent memory that survives the model

Nothing in the structure is tied to a vendor. The records are plain files with plain metadata, so the same memory can be read by a cloud model today and a local one tomorrow. When the model is replaced, the memory does not have to be rebuilt — which is currently one of the largest hidden costs in running agents.

Avenue 02

Regulated document control

Safety assessments, drawings, sign-offs, photographs. The paired-rib rule means the signed form and its evidence cannot separate, and the map on every record means a document pulled for an audit arrives already carrying its own provenance and placement rationale.

Avenue 03

Field and offline work

Fetch-by-address needs no index server. A crew truck with a partial copy can still resolve anything it holds, and reconcile later without a merge conflict, because addresses are assigned by structure rather than by sequence.

Avenue 04

Permissioning by bone

Access can be granted a rib at a time. Because every record already declares its rib, the permission check is a property of the data rather than a rule maintained beside it — the common source of the worst class of disclosure bug.

Avenue 05

Long-horizon recall

The decay floor is the differentiator. Systems that prune optimise for today's relevance and quietly destroy the ability to answer "what did we know about this in 2019?" This one is built so that question always has an answer.

Avenue 06

Provenance and ownership

Every record is dated at creation and carries why it was placed. For creative and IP work that turns an archive into a defensible timeline rather than a folder of files with modification stamps that a copy operation can destroy.

The paintings came first. The architecture was found in them.

This was not designed on a whiteboard and then illustrated with art. It ran the other way, over sixteen years, and the software arrived last.

An archive that kept getting lost

A working brain of notes, records and images was accumulating faster than it could be found again. Every conventional fix — folders, tags, search, embeddings — worked at the moment of filing and failed a month later, because none of them made where a thing belongs a decidable question.

The realisation was that the categories had been settled a decade earlier. The twelve paintings were not twelve pictures — they were twelve stable, exhaustive, non-overlapping things a life is about. Nature. Love. Meditation. Positivity. Science and spirituality. Cells. Gratitude. Energy. Thought. Connectivity. Consciousness. Imagination. The architecture was locked to them the same day, and the brain was re-cut to fit.

Stones to bones see it →

Finishing the twelfth painting, the teeth in the sleeve of the figure were seen to form XII. Teeth are the most mineralised tissue in the body — the place where the stones and the skeleton are the same material. The stones had become bones, which is what the structure had already become in code.

The lava rock is the first stone

Someone looking at the finished face saw lava. Igneous rock is the first rock — the one all the others come from. So the twelfth painting arrives back at the first stone, and twelve returns to one. That is not a poetic flourish added afterwards; it is the same rule the code enforces, which is how it was recognised.

The structure was made walkable

That sentence is the reason the architecture and the paintings are one body of work rather than two. OIRA — Organically Induced Recursive Art — described work where the recursion happened in the maker and came out through the hand. AiRT is what it becomes when the recursion runs in both directions: the mind shapes the system, and the system, holding sixteen years of the mind in an addressable form, shapes what gets made next. Rib XII is called The Imaginist for that reason. It is the rib where the two meet.

What is running today.

The brain is live. It is read by more than one agent, on more than one machine, including a local model that never sends anything to a cloud service. Retrieval is scored by structure — a match in the title outranks a match in the tags, which outranks the summary, which outranks the path — so a hit is explainable rather than a similarity score nobody can audit. Images resolve through one-time addresses that stop working the moment they are used, so a shared link is a single delivery and never a standing door into the archive.

It was built by one person, over sixteen years of painting and roughly a year of code, on a hosted server and two Macs. That is the other half of the claim: this shape of memory does not need a research lab. It needs a decision about what the twelve things are, and the discipline to never file anything outside them.
